Coach Joel has spent close to a decade training as a competitive bodybuilder, powerlifter, and strongman. His journey began after suffering a rotator cuff tear and injured back during a high school basketball game. During his recovery, he spent over a year studying rehabilitation and nutrition to regain his competitive edge.

In 2020, just before the Covid-19 lockdowns began, he established Power Up Strength. With all gyms closed, he quickly pivoted to providing online programming for his clients, utilizing unconventional equipment such as sandbags, backpacks, and even cars.

Joel also serves as the head Strength and Conditioning Coach at a local high school, where he helps students prepare for their sports, earn credits, become exercise scientists, and adopt healthy lifestyles. Through his coaching, clients have achieved professional bodybuilding status, set state and national powerlifting records, entered the world of amateur strongman competitions, and regained functional abilities.
